Jan 9, 2010 “superb meal” southend on sea essexWe visited Bistro Den Huzaar on Christmas Day. The restaurant had one sitting on that day and we arrived at 12. The decor was lovely and set the scene for a great meal. We had booked from England some weeks before and had the menu faxed to us ('the chef does not do emails') we made this request mainly to... more
Nov 29, 2009 “All round perfect restaurant” Lincolnshire Off the main square sufficiently to be both charming and good value with food that's better than any I've eaten in France, nobody told me the Belgians did it better! The Tournedos with Goose Liver is about the most perfect thing I've eaten (twice) and the local specials are both tasty and plentiful. My wife had the Crown of Lamb... more
Oct 14, 2009 “Great local cuisine” Indiana We loved this restaurant. We had lunch one day and liked it so much that we had dinner there twice. If you plan on eating dinner, I would recommend making a reservation. If you like beer, try their local brew. I preferred their blond version. more
Sep 21, 2009 “Great local food” London, United KingdomWe ate here on a Saturday night - it was busy but we'dmade a reservation. We ate a la carte - oysters to start which we deemed very good, and I had wood pigeon which was tasty too. This was preceded by an amuse bouche of mussels and chips which was very good. My husband raved about his bouillibaise and... more

From Paris to Brugge The streets are all cobblestoned, and you'll find a centuries-old church every two or three blocks. (Boring history pedantry to follow:The Germans occupied Brugge during WWI and WWII, but it was taken each time with comparatively little struggle. In other Belgium cities where the civilians resisted occupation, the Germans took out their anger on ancient libraries, churches, museums, etc. This is among the reasons that Brugge is one of the best preserved examples of a medieval town in all of Northern Europe.) Canals run all throughout the town, so there are quaint little bridges every so often that give you a chance to take nice pictures. I was having a hard time concentrating on the scenery, though, because I was so hungry. It was about 3pm and all the restaurants were closed. I finally found a place on Vlamingstraat called Den Huzaar that was open for snacks. To the Belgians, a big ham and cheese sandwich with a fried egg on top is a "snack," but when served with Perrier, orange juice and a nice pint of Belgian beer it becomes a real meal to Vince. Much happier, I was able to concentrate on looking through the neat little shops that surrounded the Markt.
Wonderful meal brugges belgiumi agree totally with the comments re: bistro den huzaar. really reasonable prices, great food, nice service. one of the best meals of our trip was rabbit in beer and prune sauce and roast pork in beer and cherry sauce. typical belgian dishes served attractively. large portions. wonderful desserts. i can't wait to go back.
05/28/08 lake forest, ca USA Had perhaps our best meal during a 3-week trip through Europe in Brugge. The restaurant is called Bistro Den Huzaar. It is on Vlamingstraat 36 near the Markt.

Good hearty Flemish dishes. Unusually good Belgian service - attentive without being irritating. Very reasonably priced considering the quality and location. Starter and main more impressive than the sweet for the set meal on the 'Promenade Menu' - which cost 32 Euros per head for three courses. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone. crm30
Having trawled the numerous restaurants and eateries around Bruges trying to find something reasonably priced and not cynically cashing in on the tourist market with over priced, average food, we eventually stumbled across this little gem and had a fantastic meal.
Despite being within spitting distance of the central market square this particular restaurant didn't seem to cater specifically to the tourist and it had an interesting and large menu.We had Venison, Sole tagliatelli, Cod and a Pork stew and they were all exceptional and far exceeded our expectations. The pork in particular was superb and melted in your mouth, it was the first time I've eaten pork without needing a knife.I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone travelling to Bruges and looking for something other than overpriced Mussels en frites! I've had several good meals at Bistro Den Huzaar (on Vlamingstraat 36 approximately 200m north of the Markt centre town). cagey Aug 23, 2004 11:25AM
We had the Belgian Stew at Bistro Den Huzaar. It was "to die for!" I just wish I could get the recipe! emc Jan 29, 2006 01:57PM
Our favourite eating places are Bistro Den Huzaar in Vlaamingstraat. If you visit the Huzaar, you can ask for a special coffee which costs more but includes a tray of small taster desserts: i/c in shape of swan, chocolate mousse, tiramisu, etc. VERONICA HELEY
